Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been a thread holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or imploding.

Matteo's Unexpected Return

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
