Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.
