Wolff Set to Sell Shareholding Valuing Mercedes Formula 1 Team at £4.6bn

Team Principal Wolff has led the Mercedes team to record-breaking achievements in Formula 1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team principal and CEO if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no comment on this. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unchanged, and all three partners are fully committed to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement signifies a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos acquired its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in market values of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and earned more than $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

It is Pitt's most successful film and the most successful sports movie to date.

Present Standings

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
